A Visit from a Hummingbird!

![]() | Some people have the mistaken impression that there are no hummingbirds in Florida, just because we’re not very easy to find. But if you’ll plant some hummingbird-friendly plants in your yard (especially red flowers), then I will come and visit. My wings beat about 100 times a second, and I really do sound like I’m humming as I zip around your yard. I like to flit around nectaring from your flowers, then I go sit in trees to rest. Our males have bright red throats, but if you see me from the side, you’ll think my throat is black. Most Likely Found: In the open fields, In the treetops, In your backyard When: Year-Round Where I've photographed: Bok Tower, Callaway Gardens, Chinsegut, Fort De Soto, Leu Gardens Read more: Ruby-Throated Hummingbird at Cornell Lab of Ornithology |

April 29, 2012 - At Callaway they stay high in the trees and sing their little song. Rich and I came up with a pneumonic for their song: "told-ya, told-ya, told-ya-so!" At one point I heard the familiar call of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, and I looked over to see two females fighting over a hummingbird…... Read more
October 22, 2011 - ...We had a great photo hike this morning at the Circle B Bar Reserve. I’m still going through my pictures, so check back tomorrow for those. October 10, 2011 - ...Happy birthday to my favorite hummingbird enthusiast… :) I have another version of this shot that has a better head angle, but I like this one too because it shows how the bird was resting on the flower while he nectared. I guess if I zipped around as much as these little birds do, I’d […] Read more

August 26, 2011 - We chose August for our trip not because of the sweltering heat, but because of the increased population of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds. April 15, 2010 - Cedar Waxwing We had a very pleasant surprise when we saw ruby-throated hummingbirds at the herb garden entrance to the vegetable gardens. I knew they returned to Georgia in April, but we saw so few of them last June, I didn't expect to see any this trip. But we saw…... Read more
April 2, 2010 - Tufted Titmouse I was very excited to see this male ruby-throated hummingbird near Exedra.
