Unexpected Lifer: Yellow-headed Blackbird

It’s not every day that you look out your window and see a lifer bird at your feeder!

Yellow-headed Blackbird

This is a Yellow-headed Blackbird. He showed up on a gray, icky day after Tropical Storm Eta passed through the state. His normal range is west of the Mississippi River, but there are regular reports of vagrants in Florida. A Yellow-headed Blackbird was photographed flying over Lake Apopka on November 3; it’s possible that this is the same bird.

Friday the 13rd brought some good luck as I updated my Life List!

  1. I am in Texas, the place as I know there will be more yellow-headed blackbirds in the winter. But I have never seen any yellow-headed blackbird in my feeders. I even have a camera set up for 24/7 recording. Why am I so unlucky. Anyway, your picture is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing it.
